What to Buy First in Break and Steal an Egg

Diagnose before you spend

The upgrade advice floating around is contradictory because players at different stages hit different walls. The correct purchase depends on which part of the run is failing, and you can identify that in one run.

If the shell takes so long that the guardian arrives before it opens, you need pickaxe Power. If the shell opens fine but you are caught on the way home, you need Speed and a trail. If your runs succeed but the cash counter crawls, you need pen capacity or better pets, not tools.

The early ladder

For the first hour the sequence that works: Stone Pickaxe at $80, then the White trail at $500, then treadmill time toward the Desert gate at 1,000 Speed. The Stone Pickaxe is cheap enough that it does not delay the trail, and the trail is what actually moves you through the first four gates.

Iron at $800 and Golden at $20,000 follow when breaking becomes the bottleneck again, which typically happens around Snowy where the eggs are tougher. Do not jump to Diamond at $160,000 before your Speed comfortably clears the zone you are farming.

Trail first or pickaxe first?

Trail first, in almost every case where the two compete. A trail multiplies a stat that opens zones, and it multiplies every future treadmill session too. A pickaxe only makes the same zone slightly faster.

The exception is when you are already at the gate for the zone you farm and shells are the slow part. Then a pickaxe converts directly into more animals per session.

What not to buy early

The expensive pickaxes advertised for late zones (Crystal at $20B, Hacker at $1.2T) are not early purchases even if you somehow have the cash: they buy break speed for zones you cannot yet survive.

Robux-only pets in the Fallen Angel set are optional. They do not unlock zones and they are not required for progression.

How to tell what is actually blocking you

The steps above describe the fix. This part is about knowing whether the fix is the one you need, and how to tell a real improvement from a lucky run.

Diagnose before you change anything

Diagnose by failure, not by price. Three failures map to three purchases: a gate that will not open is Speed, a shell that takes too long is the pickaxe, and a pen that earns too slowly is a better pet or more capacity. Write down which one you hit last and buy for that. Players who buy by price instead of by failure finish with an expensive tool aimed at a wall they already cleared, and no cash for the one still in front of them.

Check that the change actually landed

After a purchase, go straight back to the exact failure that made you buy it. If that wall is still standing, the purchase was not the bottleneck and the next item on your list is. Time a single run before and after, not a whole session, because a longer session absorbs the change in noise. When the two timings are indistinguishable, you bought for the wrong failure and the honest move is to stop buying until you can name the failure again.

Common misreads

The biggest misread is copying an order from someone further along than you. Their lane has different walls, so their expensive first purchase answers a question you have not been asked yet. The second is reading the priciest item as the biggest upgrade: price tracks what an item unlocks, not what you need now. The third is buying the same fix twice — two pickaxes answer one problem, and the second one buys nothing while a different purchase would have moved you.

Questions this guide gets asked

Should I buy a pickaxe or a trail first?

Trail, unless you already meet the gate for the zone you farm and shells are the slow part.

Is the Golden Pickaxe worth $20,000?

Yes once you are farming Snowy and breaking is your bottleneck; not before.

Do pen upgrades matter?

They matter for income rather than progression. Buy them when runs succeed but cash is flat.
